Tips for Calling 9-1-1
If you call 9-1-1, even by mistake, do not hang up the phone!
Dispatchers must process abandoned calls; this can cause stress on the 9-1-1 system and can tie up critical resources. If you mistakenly call 9-1-1, remain on the phone and explain that it was by accident when the dispatcher answers.
When calling 9-1-1, do your best to stay calm and answer all questions.
Staying calm can be extremely difficult during emergency situations. However, it is one of the most important things you can do when calling 9-1-1. Dispatchers are required to obtain crucial information to help the first responders get to you as fast as possible. Remaining calm and answering the questions helps us provide the best service possible.
Know the location of the emergency
Even though Iosco County 9-1-1 is equipped with ANI/ALI (Automatic Number Identification/Automatic Location Identification) this does not mean that your address will always show up when calling 9-1-1. Look for landmarks, cross street signs, and buildings to help identify your location. Know the name of the city or township that you are calling from. Providing an accurate address is critically important especially when making a wireless 9-1-1 call.
Teach children how to use 9-1-1.
Be sure to teach your children about 9-1-1. Have them practicing saying their name, parents name, telephone number, and most importantly their address. Teach them that dispatchers will ask them questions and to stay on the phone until instructed to hang up.
Have your address clearly marked at your driveway or mailbox and home.
Posting your address at the mailbox or driveway and on your home will alleviate any confusion as to whether emergency responders have the correct location. Make sure to use something reflective so the address is illuminated at night. You can purchase 9-1-1 Address Reflective Signs at your local hardware stores and online.
Considerations with VoIP based telephones.
VoIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol based telephones use your internet connection to provide a phone service. With VoIP service you must register your 9-1-1 address correctly. If not, the service is unable to route your call correctly, and your call may end up in a completely different state. Contact your VoIP service provider, if you’re not positive your information is correct.
